RHINO TOP
Acrylic/Epoxy Emulsion Coating
A water-based acrylic finish containing an epoxy additive for durable and attractive protection against abrasion, weathering and moisture degradation.
Description
RHINO TOP is a high-quality water-based acrylic finish incorporating an epoxy additive to increase the abrasion resistance properties of the film. RHINO TOP can be applied as a smooth or textured finish. A special spherical silica sand (supplied on request) can be added for a uniformly textured, non-skid surface.
RHINO TOP provides a durable colored topping for horizontal wood and concrete surfaces. In addition, its satin sheen makes RHINO TOP an aesthetically pleasing wall dressing which effectively evens out texture and color variations over various wood and concrete surfaces.
Basic Uses
RHINO TOP was specifically developed for use over wood, concrete, masonry, stucco and plaster surfaces where a durable colored coating is required. Its epoxy modified acrylic finish is designed to resist abrasion, weathering and moisture degradation.
RHINO TOP is recommended for use on decks, stairways, ramps, walkways, recreational courts, pool decks, tennis courts, patio decks and floors. It is also specified as a fine texture, weather resistant colored finish on vertical surfaces such as building exteriors, bridge structures, median barriers, retaining walls and noise abatement walls.
RHINO TOP can be used in combination with ELASTUFF 120 basecoat on applications requiring a waterproof membrane topcoated with a non-skid colored finish. This system is especially effective on boat decks, recreational decks, home decks, stairways, lanais and above grade tennis courts.

Packaging and Mixing
RHINO TOP is a single package material available in 1 gallon cans (3.8 liters). RHINO TOP should be thoroughly mixed prior to application using either a paint stirrer or power mixer capable of uniformly mixing the entire container. When using the textured formulation, mix the container periodically to prevent settling of the non-skid texture aggregate.
Rhino Top Advantages
- Single package, water-based system for ease of application and clean-up.
- Bonds tenaciously to wood, concrete and masonry surfaces.
- Resists ultraviolet degradation for long term protection and color stability.
- Provides durable, non-skid texture on interior or exterior surfaces.
- Resists wear and abrasion through the incorporation of an epoxy additive.
- Helps prevent dusting and spalling of concrete surfaces.
- Surfaces resist penetration from general soils, motor oils and gasoline for ease of cleaning.
- No toxic fumes or objectional odor. Meets all VOC requirements.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces should be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from dust, curing agents or form release agents, efflorescence, scale, or other foreign contaminants. Any base coating such as S-1™ Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer or ELASTUFF 120 should be cured to the point of being non-sticky.
Actual surface preparation procedures on a specific project may vary depending upon service conditions, condition of the substrate, and the presence of existing paints, coatings or other contaminants. For this reason, we recommend that you contact us if you have any questions and use the following for guideline purposes.
Wood: RHINO TOP can be applied directly to clean new wood only if it is preliminarily primed with at least one coating of S-1™ Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer. To substantially waterproof the wood, 2–3 coats of S-1™ should be applied, including all seams and edges. After the sealer has completely dried/cured, existing hairline cracks should be filled by brushing with RHINO TOP in sufficient quantity to totally hide the crack. All cracks larger than hairline should be considered as “moving” and be cleaned and filled with SculpWood® Epoxy Paste or Putty. The epoxy filler should be troweled flush with sufficient pressure to fill the cracks and joints completely. At the intersection of all vertical and horizontal surfaces, apply a ½″ (1.3 cm) bead of a polyurethane sealant such as our Dymonic® 100, tooled slightly concave. Avoid using the flexible polyurethane sealants to fill voids on horizontal surfaces that will receive traffic. Use only the SculpWood® Epoxy Paste or Putty to fill on trafficked surfaces. At least 2 generous coatings of RHINO TOP are required on top of the primed surface. Each additional coat should be applied perpendicular to the original coating.
Old wood or restored wood should be clean and bare and free of any foreign contaminants. The wood must have a prime coating of S-1™ Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer. If the wood shows any signs of deterioration, softness or rot, then we recommend repair procedures as outlined in our epoxy wood repair section. To substantially waterproof the wood, 2–3 coats of S-1™ Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer should be applied, including all seams and edges. For PLYWOOD it is essential that all side, and end-grain surfaces be completely waterproofed with multiple coats (at least 3) of S-1™ Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer, or an epoxy resin such as our General Purpose Epoxy™ Resin. Otherwise water will wick in through the edges and the plywood will begin to delaminate.
Concrete: Concrete and masonry surfaces should be structurally sound, clean, dry, fully cured, and free from dust, curing agents or form release agents, efflorescence, scale, or other foreign contaminants, sharp projections, ridges and loose aggregate. Prior to application over vertical masonry block, an approved block filler should be used to fill the pores and achieve a pinhole free surface.
New concrete must be allowed to cure a minimum of 28 days. Then shall be cleaned and etched, then rinsed with liberal amounts of fresh water to assure complete acid removal.
Sandblasting of concrete will be required if the surfaces are contaminated to the point that alternate cleaning methods are ineffective. Concrete having a smooth, steel-troweled finish must be acid etched or sandblasted. Prior to sealer application, all loose material, foreign objects, dirt and dust shall be removed by use of a power vacuum or compressed air. Immediately following final cleaning, surfaces shall be sealed with one coat of S-1™ if surface consolidation is necessary.
Coating Application
Prior to the application of RHINO TOP, all surfaces should be primed with at least one coat of S-1™ applied at the rate of 250 sq. ft. per gallon (6 sq. meters/liter).
RHINO TOP shall be applied by brush or roller, using a ¼ to ½ inch (6 to 13 mm) nap roller.
RHINO TOP should be applied in two (2) separate coats to assure even coverage and proper film build. Apply at the rate of 200–250 sq. ft. per gallon (5–6 sq. meters/liter) per coat. All surfaces must be uniformly coated and free from voids, pinholes and blisters. Successive coats of RHINO TOP should be applied perpendicular to the previous coat as soon as it has dried sufficiently to walk on. This is normally accomplished within 2 hours, but in any event before contamination occurs. If contamination does occur on any coated surface, it must be broomed or if necessary pressure washed before additional coats are applied. RHINO TOP should extend a minimum of 4″ (10 cm) up vertical walls or projections to create a self-terminating flashing.
Clean-up
Brush or roller are easily cleaned with soapy water.
Limitations and Precautions
RHINO TOP requires complete evaporation of water to cure. Cool temperatures and high humidity retard cure. Do not apply during weather conditions such as rain, fog, or freezing temperatures, or if such conditions are imminent. Rhino Top has a 2 year shelf life from the date of manufacture.
Do not apply RHINO TOP at temperatures below 50°F (10°C) or when there is a possibility of temperatures falling below 32°F (0°C). Do not ship or store unless protection from freezing is available. Exposure to sub-freezing temperatures can damage this product.
