Subject: steel and rust (And CPES)

Have you seen any indications that CPES will help stop rust on steel? I plan to clean it and phosphate etch it, but it is in close contact with wood that I plan to treat. It seems to me that epoxy will seal the steel as well as paint would.

You are correct. The CPES will seal the steel. I would suggest, though, about three coats on the steel part of the application, allowing about an hour between coatings. The epoxy will grip the steel in a way that paint won't, and then the paint in turn will grip the epoxy.

This a very similar to the process the large companies recommend for the sealing of tanks and pipes with urethane top coatings. Epoxy on first, then the urethane.
