Subject: Formica counter top
Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004

I have a Formica kitchen counter top with a particle board substrate. Around the opening in the counter top for the sink, we have water damage to the particle board substrate material about 2/3 of one side of the opening. The Formica surface is intact. Will any of your products repair the particle board substrate and save our counter top as long as I am able to prevent any further leaks in this area?

Thank you
Jeff C.

Jeff,

Yes, our products could be used to repair any damage to your particle board substrate. You didn't specify exactly what the damage was, but I'll outline a typical repair. I would make sure that the particle board is dry first. Then prep the area as necessary. Sometimes water will swell particle board, so the surface might be higher than it used to be. If so, just remove enough of the particle board material to bring it a little below level. Then brush on some of our CPES™. Once this cures, I would fill in any low spots with our Fill-It™ epoxy putty. Sand or shape as necessary, then you are ready to re-glue the formica. Normal formica adhesive would work, or you could go with some of our Layup & Laminating™ Epoxy Resin.
Any area that has been treated with our epoxy products should never absorb moisture in the future.
